I made this animated map showing IEDs as
documented in the recent major data leak facilitated by Wikileaks (overlaid on a NATO map
of the area). It starts off slow, but the longer you wait, the more furious the attacks
seem to get. The green explosions are ones in which no one was hurt, yellow ones are
injuries only, and red ones are fatal IEDs. On the death and injury tallies, the left
column is friendlies (including both allied forces and civilians), and the right column is
so-called "enemies". Everything else should be obvious. I created this with some
quick one-off custom software written late at night to do the required animation (loosely
inspired by a tool I built in the 90s to animate web server log files, but only very
loosely since I no longer have the source code). The reason I mention this is to apologize

Here's a story that has been going around the web since about 2007. It's pretty amazing
and I'm kind of surprised that it hasn't received more attention. I think many
editors thought it was too far fetched to be true. To be honest, we thought it was a hoax
until one of the staff here at viewzone decided to procure the film strips from the NASA
site, noticed that there were two images of the object available (taken from different
angles) and made a 3D composite image.
The US government is renewing efforts to
keep drug-related violence - and the contraband itself - from spilling over its border
with Mexico. But the killing of a rancher in the southwestern US state of Arizona in March
has prompted authorities there to press Washington for even tighter security against the
traffickers. The ranchers say they have been dragged into the drug war by virtue of their
location along a porous and increasingly dangerous border. Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar
reports from a border ranch in Nogales, Arizona, where one rancher shares how he feels
about life in the middle of an illegal migration route between Arizona and Mexico.

Google's cosy relationship with the U.S.
spy network has once again been thrust into the spotlight as the company is reported to
have jointly invested with the CIA in an Internet monitoring project that scours Twitter
accounts, blogs and websites for all sorts of information, and can also "predict the
future". Google Ventures, the investment arm of Google, has injected a sum of
up to $10 million, as has In-Q-Tel -- which handles investments for the CIA and the wider
intelligence network -- into a company called Recorded Future. The company describes its
analytics as "the ultimate tool for open-source intelligence". Wired's defence
analyst, Noah Schachtman, has a detailed report on the joint venture: "...it scours
tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships
between people, organizations, actions and incidents — both present and
still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes
beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk
about the same, or related, entities and events." The idea is to figure out for each
incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future
then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event."
Recorded Future "continually scans thousands of news publications, blogs, niche
sources, trade publications, government web sites, financial databases and more,"
according to it's portfolio. It sifts through millions of posts and conversations taking
place on blogs, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon to "assemble actual real-time dossiers on
people." It is also being integrated with Google Earth, which, as Schachtman points
out in his piece, was seeded with In-Q-Tel/CIA investment. This integration will allow
real time tracking of the locations of persons or groups as part of the overall
intelligence dossier.

Oil Spill In Michigan

Pipeline oil rupture near Marshall, Michigan, just 10 miles from where I live. The spill
is flowing into the Kalamazoo River which flows through West Michigan and out to Lake
Michigan. Last year, I walked all the way around Lake Michigan, a journey of over a 1,000

Oily Geyser Not Related To BP Spill
A new oil leak, spewing from a geyser near
Barataria Bay, is not related to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Reports from the
Jean Lafitte area say that the geyser, which is a combination of oil, gas and water, was
most likely caused by an accidential rupture of the line.
